The Heartless Ranch Is Haunted is the first novel in the This Is Dismal series by Nebraska author and Spoonflower designer Bunny Hammond.
The story is a western family saga with ghost cowboys. Women’s friendship and the connections between mothers and daughters and sisters in the American West are the central lens.
The second novel in the series, entitled This Is Dismal, picks up the speed in the story. Cowboys from the past, fast cars and radioactive technology keep the pages turning as the story grows to include some soft thriller and sci fi elements intertwined with a western historical fiction dual timeline.
Bunny employs vivid dream imagery while also paying tribute to the great authors of the Nebraska prairie. She strives to keep the narrative straightforward but the story layered. So that you have plenty to think about later.
Bunny is also interpreting the story from the novels through textile design. These are quilting and upholstery and fashion fabrics available through Spoonflower. The fictional world of Dismal is a very colorful and expressive place, she invites you to feel your way through the story via textiles.

Many of the fabrics are specific to places in the book, an abandoned house, the New Mexico desert, the Nebraska Sandhills. Many are created specifically for the different characters. You can see Don the ghost, Phoebe, Barb. Emmy and Ashley.
And characters from Book Two including Clyde, Virgil, Fred, Kate, Ivory, Doris and Otto.
Some of the fabrics are inspired by the dual timelines, the modern western world and the west in the past. And there are some that represent the themes and atmospheres of the Dismal story. They are immersive world building artifacts.
